The Engine is Alive!

With the engine working we headed out of Culebra for Green Beach on Vieques.  This was a downwind sail only interrupted by one shower.  Along the way we attempted to fly the gennaker and broke a block needed to hoist it... so scratch that plan.  In Vieques we saw Dudley and Lisa again as they were with their families on a charter boat then we headed out for a bike ride.  After years of living in PR we finally saw the wild Paso Fino horses!  There are some pictures of them in our photo albums.  We biked all around the old military roads then back along the beach.  Long day....

Wake Up Call From the US Navy

Today we were woken up at 6 a.m. by the U.S. Navy and a siren.  In broken english we were told that we had to leave as they were conducting a clean-up on the near by beach for unexploded bombs. (research Vieques history for more detail)  After our tax payer provided wake up call we set sail for Culebra.  Here we arrived in the afternoon and rode our bikes around the island.

We visited Falmenco beach, the best on the island, and one of the prettier beaches we have seen.  Later we came back to the boat and started to head back to Green Beach on Vieques.  As we left the engine died as we ran out of diesel due to a leak in a fuel return line.  Again we anchored in Culebra, this time with no engine, after finding and fixing the leak headed to gas station for Diesel.  After a top off of fuel we cleaned entire deck of boat.  Dustin cooked pizza for dinner, again to bed early as we were tired.

St. Croix to Vieques, Puerto Rico

Today we made the crossing from St. Croix to Vieques Puerto Rico. It was a great down wind run with just enough wind to keep us moving well. For a wile we ran wing and wing with the head sail polled out! We arrived at Icacos on the far east end of Vieques. Here we went for a walk on the beach and kept a sharp lookout for bombs!

Old Friends and New

Deemed as island exploration day we rented a car near Christensted.  From here explored island.   As we were snooping for "a place to get married" we found a resort and worked out.  The looking for a beach to get married on excuse always works great at the security desks!  After more driving we had lunch at a local deli near other main town- Fredericksted.  Later in the day we hit the Cruzan Rum distillery for a tour.  Continuing our circumnavigation of the island we later explored some beaches on the east end of the island.  Later in the evening we were able to meet up with a good friend of mine who lives on the island.  Thank you for dinner Joe!

Buck Island

We wanted to see Buck Island, the island was a National Park famous for snorkeling.  Located about 2 miles from where we were anchored this was a great day trip.  After some dinghy exploration we spent afternoon snorkeling.  We did a off the reef dive outside and inside of the reef on the north shore, then went to the "snorkel trail" this is less spectacular as all of the coral is dead but it is still pretty snorkeling.

I am happy to speak very frankly about sailing, living aboard, living in the Caribbean, leaving the US system, or any other topic you want to discuss. I have watched many people come and go from boating in the time I have been living aboard, both those living on smaller boats and those living on 110 foot mega yachts. It seems that many people come expecting tropical paradise and are shocked to find paradise is not always what you see in the pictures but includes some mosquitoes, huge bugs, poverty, stray dogs, crime, drugs, and many other problems left out of the tourist photos.
