Preperations and Good Bye!

The last few days had been a whirlwind.  Between boat work and work on the island for business purposes it had been busy.  Over the weekend we got the boat prepared, stocked, sails returned (but not hung), provisioned, watered, and the whole departure check list done.  It was now creeping up on noon Wedensday and and we finally got headed out for an anchorage to hang sails, then a fuel stop, then off for ??.  It turns out that we had just enough time to make it to Green Beach Vieques once again.  Here we took a mooring for the night and prepared to hit the south shore of Puerto Rico in the morning.

Boat Maintenance

Boat work on Friday the 13th yikes!  We pulled off the main sail and the head sail for repairs today.  They have not been to the sail maker for a good year or so and need a re stitch here and there.  The head sail had a rip in the protective cover that needed to be repaired and knowing we have another 1100 miles to sail... we took them in.

As well today we started the provisioning process hitting the local store and bringing back a car load of food!

With the boat in the Conquistador Marina we work early and hit the Golden Door Spa Gym for a workout. Later we headed out for the San Juan are seeing Condado, San Juan Viejo, and El Morro.

Today was "D" day.... yes decision day.... the decision to turn left instead of right was made today.  Yes scratch heading to the US east coast... lets head for central american... How about Panama?

A very nice day overall.

El Conquistador Returns

Today we left Esperanza early in the morning headed for either Green Beach or the Isla Palominos.  The latter is very close to the Conquistador Resort where we planned on keeping the boat for a week or so.  Sailing went great with good boat speed so we kept up the sails and continued all the way to Palominos.  Here we played sand volleyball all afternoon.  Late in the afternoon we headed on into the marina, lines attached and secured by 6pm!  Endless fresh water at last to wash the deck with!

Swiming with Fire

Early in the morning we moved the boat from Green Beach to Esperanza.  Esperanza is on the south shore and is one of two main towns on the island.  The attraction here is a world famous bio luminescent bay. This is one of these bays where if you simply disturb the water it burns a glowing color of green.  After looking around the town a bit and being informed by "Sharkey" that our dinghy was on the fishing dock and needed to be moved we went for a long bike ride to Isabela Segunda.  A long ride up hill both ways, Isabela Segunda proved to be a nice quite island town.  Upon our return we had some dinner quickly and headed out for the Bio Bay.  This was really a once in a life time experience to be able to swim in a glowing pond of sea water.  Small sparkles all over you like fire works if you dunk yourself and get out quickly.  Very impressive.

I am happy to speak very frankly about sailing, living aboard, living in the Caribbean, leaving the US system, or any other topic you want to discuss. I have watched many people come and go from boating in the time I have been living aboard, both those living on smaller boats and those living on 110 foot mega yachts. It seems that many people come expecting tropical paradise and are shocked to find paradise is not always what you see in the pictures but includes some mosquitoes, huge bugs, poverty, stray dogs, crime, drugs, and many other problems left out of the tourist photos.
