My husband and I plan to go cruising on our own boat someday. We would like to be exposed to the cruising life before we spend $350K on a boat we may not like after all. Can you help us make sure we want to do this?

We will make every effort to expose you to the real world of cruising. This is NOT a charter, you are not chartering a captain and cook to haul you from port to port and cook for you. You will be involved in every aspect of cruising and be exposed to the lifestyle as if you were living it for your time on board. I would think that after your time on board you would be able to make a better educated decision of your future.

What level of sailing experience do I need to join you for the Adventure Cruising Program?

General sailing skills with basic knowledge of boat mechanical parts, navigation, and general marine terminology is all that is required. Ocean sailing experience is not necessary. If you are in doubt email us and ask! The goal of our program is to expose our visitors to the world of cruising and let them learn boat mechanical systems, navigation, and other critical skills hands on. It is not necessary you be a jack of all trades to come visit us!

What is included and what is not included in my stay?

Included in your stay is food and beverages, we will have 3 meals per day on board in most cases.  In some cases you will want to eat out to try the local "this or that" that the place is famous for, you will pay for your own food off the boat.  With meals drinks may be served, wine as well, in these cases the wine, beer, or drinks are included as well.  Off the boat if you want to go to a bar, again, you pay for your own tab.

As for living consumables all things on the boat are included, you do not need to bring toilet paper, or any bathroom supplies other than personal items.

Sleeping provisions are also included.  Each bunk will be made up with sheets and a blanket or light blanket.  As well you will have access to pillows for your bunk.

If I want extra help with a particular topic, say boat mechanical, will you help?

Yes, this is easier if you have booked all births on the boat as then there are no other visitors to contend with asking other questions making the conversation stray.

What if I need to arrive a day early or stay a day later than what the plan is, can I stay with you?

It may be possible. Contact us and if we are ready for you it will be no problem. If not we can help you find a room for the night.

What should I bring?

We have a list of items to bring and not bring, this will be provided after your application is accepted. One item.... NO HARD SIDED LUGGAGE is allowed.

I'm concerned about getting to meet the boat....

In general we are in port both before and after the designated meeting date. Do not worry, simply stay connected and communicate to us if you have problems, we will try to make every effort to help.

What do I need to do to get ready to come on a voyage?

  • Complete our recommended reading list, provided after your application is accepted.
  • Sail and implement some of the new ideas you learned in the reading list.
  • Research and learn about the places we will visit during your voyage so you may better enjoy the time you have there.
  • Prepare yourself physically for the voyage.

What are the duties for Cruising Program visitors?

Our daily routine will be based around what activities there are planned for the day. During each cruise we try to plan 3 to 4 short passage days and one long passage day. This gives our guests the ability to fine tune their coastal navigation skills as well as be exposed to a longer sail. As well there will be days at anchor in port. As you can see each day the duties will be different. In general our guests are well... guests day 1, and then as the voyage progresses... active crew later in the week operating the boat efficiently. The crew duties include everything sailing, cooking, navigating, customs, weather, cleaning, watch, provisioning, and more.

Do you carry dive equipment on Nadagato?

No we do not carry dive tanks or a compressor aboard the boat. If you wish to dive you can either bring your own equipment or go with local dive charter companies. It is no problem for you to bring your own equipment.

What do I have to do on watch?

Ther person on watch will be responsible for steering, navigating, lookout, trimming sails, checking the radar, log entries and general boat management while on watch. It is the ships rule that any time the person on watch becomes the slightest bit worried or flustered they shall awake or alert the captain. No stress, ask questions, fix the concern, continue to sail!

What length of watches do you run?

This depends upon the number of crew on board and the passage length we will do. At most a 4 hour watch per person would be scheduled.

Need Input

Need Input?

I am happy to speak very frankly about sailing, living aboard, living in the Caribbean, leaving the US system, or any other topic you want to discuss. I have watched many people come and go from boating in the time I have been living aboard, both those living on smaller boats and those living on 110 foot mega yachts. It seems that many people come expecting tropical paradise and are shocked to find paradise is not always what you see in the pictures but includes some mosquitoes, huge bugs, poverty, stray dogs, crime, drugs, and many other problems left out of the tourist photos.
