December 2004

The Magma grill was given as a gift during Christmas. The grill was promptly installed on the stern starboard rails and has remained in that spot during every passage and during everything but hurricane preparations when she gets stowed in the aft trunk. The grill lights easy, burns clean, and has just enough room to cook for 3 or 4 if you shift things around and multi task!

June / July 2007 UPDATE

During this time the grill has been cleaned on a regular basis and used on a regular basis. I would not say the grill has been over used or left over dirty as for some reason the previous boat cleaner loved to clean the grill. This said I would consider the usage level average and care level average as well. The grill has never been covered, they do sell a cover for the grill but personally I like to look at the stainless steel. We are now having problems lighting the grill, keeping her burning, and the gas control knob freely rotates in the gas control housing... but still works somewhat.

September 2007 UPDATE

Today was Magma Newport overhaul day. A quick trip to Island Water World and Budget Marine gave me a new gas control and a new burner. I had Clean the grill then we did the surgery and replaced the burner and gas control. The sparker seems to be working.

December 2007 UPDATE

After the overhaul the burner is working well. The sparker has failed again. Not sure what is wrong but it is sure annoying to have to open the grill and light the burner with a match. I suppose this unit is 3 years old, but... I would think this should still work.

I am happy to speak very frankly about sailing, living aboard, living in the Caribbean, leaving the US system, or any other topic you want to discuss. I have watched many people come and go from boating in the time I have been living aboard, both those living on smaller boats and those living on 110 foot mega yachts. It seems that many people come expecting tropical paradise and are shocked to find paradise is not always what you see in the pictures but includes some mosquitoes, huge bugs, poverty, stray dogs, crime, drugs, and many other problems left out of the tourist photos.
