This boat was listed with a local broker and I knew the basics of the KP background and reputation. As a side note reviewing this design more I found there is a very nice owners group web site. This can be found on any major search engine with "kelly peterson owners" as the key words. The particular boat I reviewed was in good condition. Boarding the boat one is placed into a center cockpit that has exits aft and forward into the cabin. Called walkover by many, this boat also has a walk under passage on the starboard side of the boat. This passage has very low headroom. The cockpit is very roomy and well thought out for short handing. All winches are aft of the wheel making it easy for the helms person to make sail adjustments. This particular boat was set up with furling head and stay sails. Boat was rigged with running backstays and a dual spreader mast. The aft masters cabin is very nice for this size boat. It is a good split between a usable head and a berth. Head and cabin both have at least 6'2" standing headroom. Moving forward one can pass through the passageway inside on the starboard side of the boat or pass through the cockpit. Going through the passageway shows that the boat has lowered headroom and all but children will be forced to stoop when passing through this section. Exiting the passage the nav station is to the starboard galley to port. Both large and well layed out. A complaint about the galley would be that the refrigerator shares a wall with the engine compartment. Not good for heat reasons. Moving forward the salon is open and well layed out. A large table that can seat plenty is on starboard. Forward yet more is a head to starboard and the v birth. The forward head is not as large as the aft but has more headroom. Still larger than most and well thought out. The aft head has seating for a shower as well as seating on the head itself. Very large aft and forward heads. Vbirth is of good size and has good storage. Aft of the galley on the port side is a work room. The work room has standing headroom if you open the port cockpit bench seat. Remember this is the same area you must stoop to pass aft on the other side of the boat. Here one finds a workbench with vice and tools. Another concern about the boat surfaced here. When thinking of this design in ultimate conditions there are many "holes" to clog to keep water out of the boat. The aft companion way, forward companion way, and now this "headroom" hatch. I am sure they can all be sealed well but the risk must be though of. The deck of the KP 46 is open and has room for a dinghy stored forward of the mast and aft of the staysail. All rigging looked well designed. Boat has dual anchor rollers. Over all my visit to the boat found that the 46 is a roomy well thought out design with only one major drawback, the passage to the aft berth has very low headroom. This may not be a problem for some and when thinking of what would be given up to open this passage up I would stick with the extra cockpit space as the Peterson did. This design remains a possibility for consideration.

I am happy to speak very frankly about sailing, living aboard, living in the Caribbean, leaving the US system, or any other topic you want to discuss. I have watched many people come and go from boating in the time I have been living aboard, both those living on smaller boats and those living on 110 foot mega yachts. It seems that many people come expecting tropical paradise and are shocked to find paradise is not always what you see in the pictures but includes some mosquitoes, huge bugs, poverty, stray dogs, crime, drugs, and many other problems left out of the tourist photos.
