This boat was listed with a broker in San Francisco.  The boat is in Moss Landing which is a few hours north of Newport Beach where we live.  After making the drive I am glad to say it was well worth it.

The Hylas 47 AKA the Stevens 47 has quite a history.  The boat is an Sparkman and Stephens design.  S&S has been very helpful with me providing me original sales brochures from when she was call a Hylas 47, brochures from the Stevens 47, stability plots, polar plots, IMS certifications, and many plan drawings.  Simply put S&S has the best service for a non customer I have ever seen.  EVER.

The hull of the 47 is the same hull Hylas uses for the 49 today.  The only changes that have been made are above the waterline.  Contact or read on the net for more info.

I like the open layout of this design.  The build quality seems to be good.  I have read that some are better than others but are of general good quality.  Specifically I like the midships double single bunks.  This can be great for storage of larger items when cruising or for crew when crew is needed.  Going aft there are two passages with 6'2+ headroom leading to a centerline queen master stateroom.  There is also another design with the queen offset to one side.

Galley is stretched out down the port passage.  Nice counter space and plenty of storage.  The sink is a real plus with a huge stainless sunken splash area around it.  Nice for cleanup and nice for everything else.

In my opinion there is a lot to be said for this design, hull, layout, and build quality.  This design remains a strong contender in my opinion.

I am happy to speak very frankly about sailing, living aboard, living in the Caribbean, leaving the US system, or any other topic you want to discuss. I have watched many people come and go from boating in the time I have been living aboard, both those living on smaller boats and those living on 110 foot mega yachts. It seems that many people come expecting tropical paradise and are shocked to find paradise is not always what you see in the pictures but includes some mosquitoes, huge bugs, poverty, stray dogs, crime, drugs, and many other problems left out of the tourist photos.
