This boat was a happen to be find. I was walking marinas in Ft. Lauderdale looking at 2 Stevens 47s I had made appointments to see. I was passing through town on a business trip returning from el Salvador and Panama via Miami. I had my eye on the two Stevens 47s and a third Stevens that I had not had time to call on. Upon seeing the first and second Stevens 47 I went in search of the third. The boat was supposed to be listed with Jordan Yacht and Ship. Upon getting there I was told the boat was sold BUT there was a Hylas 49 that had just come in and was going to be listed for sale. I had seen the boat because walking around I had seen a lady unloading all sorts of personal goods off the boat. Saying the 49 was out of my price range I agreed to go look at her. If you do not know the history the 49 is a next generation version of the Hylas / Stevens 47. They took the boat added stern steps, raised the freeboard 2 inches, deepened the cockpit, and re-arranged the interior a bit. WOW! Nice moves. See my comments on the 47 and remove any concerns I have about the cockpit on the 47 as the 49 has real back supports and much more room. Headroom throughout the boat is greatly increased in many areas that were near scrapes for me at 6'2", it seems now there may be 6'5" headroom throughout. The new window arrangement also brightens the whole boat greatly.

I am happy to speak very frankly about sailing, living aboard, living in the Caribbean, leaving the US system, or any other topic you want to discuss. I have watched many people come and go from boating in the time I have been living aboard, both those living on smaller boats and those living on 110 foot mega yachts. It seems that many people come expecting tropical paradise and are shocked to find paradise is not always what you see in the pictures but includes some mosquitoes, huge bugs, poverty, stray dogs, crime, drugs, and many other problems left out of the tourist photos.
